A UK DID number is a real British phone number that receives calls and forwards them wherever you tell it to — a SIP trunk, a PBX, a softphone or an external number. You do not need a UK office, a UK bank account or a UK company to run one, and you do not need to send anyone a scan of your passport. This guide covers which UK number ranges actually exist, what they cost, how many calls they carry at once, and how to get one live on your own infrastructure the same day.
DID stands for Direct Inward Dialing: a telephone number that routes an inbound call straight to a chosen endpoint instead of through a switchboard. In Europe the same thing is often called DDI (Direct Dial-In). Modern DIDs are virtual — the carrier receives the call from the public telephone network, matches the dialed number and hands it to you as a SIP INVITE over the internet. Your PBX or softphone reads the number and rings the extension, queue or application it belongs to.
That distinction matters when you compare quotes. A "UK number" from a signup-only service might be a web-based app line that cannot be pointed at your own switch. A DID is infrastructure: you own the routing, you keep the CDRs and you can move the number when you change providers.
The UK numbering plan has several families, and the answer rate you get depends heavily on which one appears on the caller''s handset.
The 020 prefix covers Greater London and is the most recognised geographic range in the country. Callers see a normal London number, dial it at their standard rate, and it works on every mobile and landline. It is the default choice for a sales or support line that needs to look local without looking like a call-centre.
If London is not the right impression, the same product is available with Birmingham (0121) and Manchester (0161) prefixes, so you can match the number to the region you are actually selling into.
Freephone numbers are free for the caller in the UK — including from mobiles, which has been true since 2015. The business pays the termination cost instead. They suit order desks, care and health lines, and any campaign where a "you pay to call me" message would cost you conversions. The trade-off is that freephone is a weaker fit for cold outreach, because it reads as a company line.
UK mobile numbers start with 07 and non-geographic numbers with 03. They are useful in specific cases — a mobile DID looks like a person rather than a department, and 03 numbers are charged at geographic rates nationwide — but availability, pricing and carrier conditions vary far more than with 020 or 0800, so check current stock before you build a campaign around them.
Prices are per number, per month, in USD, and a one-off activation fee is charged with the first month. There is no per-minute inbound charge on the standard UK packages and no minimum term.
| UK package | Monthly | One-off setup | Simultaneous calls |
|---|---|---|---|
| London 020 geographic | $110.00 | $30.00 | 20 |
| Birmingham 0121 / Manchester 0161 | $110.00 | $30.00 | 20 |
| Freephone 0800 / 0808 | $175.00 | $40.00 | 30 |
So a single London number costs $140.00 in the first month and $110.00 afterwards. A freephone line costs $215.00 upfront and $175.00 monthly. If you need more than one number, the activation fee is charged per number and each carries its own channel allowance.
Channel count is the number of calls the line can carry at the same time. Size it from your busiest hour, not your headcount: a desk that peaks at twelve concurrent calls needs at least twelve channels, whether four agents or forty work there. If you need more concurrency than a package ships with, ask before ordering rather than after you hit the ceiling.
None, for the standard UK ranges we sell. You register with an email address, add funds and order from the portal — there is no ID upload, no proof of address form, no credit check and no business registration request. The portal itself is what a KYC-heavy provider uses to hold your documents; we do not run that flow at all.
Two honest caveats:
The whole flow lives in the customer portal under Numbers:
If you are paying with crypto and want the mechanics first, there is a step-by-step walkthrough in How to Pay for a SIP Trunk with USDT.
Assigning the DID to a trunk is the last step, and it is the one people get wrong. Three rules cover most cases:
+442079460000 in E.164, others match 02079460000 without the plus. Tell us which one your system uses, or add both patterns to the inbound route. For a worked example on the PBX side, including inbound routes and trunk registration, see the FreePBX SIP Trunk Setup Guide and the inbound routing walkthrough.
Can I keep my existing UK number? Usually yes, via a transfer (porting) from the current provider. Lead times depend on the losing carrier rather than us, and some ranges are not portable at all. Ask with the number and current provider name and we will check before you cancel anything.
Do UK DIDs receive SMS? Inbound SMS to a UK DID is not included in the standard voice package. If you need messaging, look at the A2P SMS routes and tell support what you are trying to do — the right product depends on whether you are receiving codes or broadcasting.
Can I cancel whenever I want? Yes. Turn auto-renew off in the portal and the number simply expires at the end of the paid period. There is no notice period and no early-exit fee.
What if the number stops working? Inbound DIDs are delivered over redundant SBCs in Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Ashburn. If a route degrades, the failover destination takes the traffic and the incident is handled at our end — you do not need to be awake for it.
Is a UK number useful if my customers are not in the UK? It depends on the goal. A London number is a credibility signal for UK buyers; for a global list it just adds a foreign dial code. Match the number to the audience you are actually calling.
